Running a modern day fire department involves much more than just answering calls for service. The dedicated volunteers of the Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department spend countless hours answering alarms, training, presenting fire prevention programs, running the day to day business operations of the department, fund raising, and performing maintenance on apparatus, equipment, and the station. All of this, and much more, is performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year without receiving a paycheck.
The volunteer fire service in the United States is estimated to save tax payers approximately $37.2 billion annually. This is an average of over $45,000 per volunteer. (ref. USFA document FA-310/May 2007). It is no secret that the number of volunteer firefighters nationally is on the decline. Lower Swatara Township is no exception to this statistic. That is why we are always looking for motivated, talented, willing individuals to join our team! Some examples of ways you can help are:
Firefighter: Individuals 18 years of age or older who have an interest in answering emergency calls for service. These individuals are required to meet basic levels of training in order to provide this valuable service.
Junior Firefighter: Addolecents between the ages of 14 and 17 years of age who are interested in becoming fully qualified firefighters when they turn 18. Junior Firefighters train and respond with the rest of the company (while maintaining compliance with the Pennsylvania Child Labor Laws) and attend entry level classes where they learn the ins and outs of the fire service.
Fire Police: Individuals who are 18 years of age or older and have an interest in providing traffic and crowd control at the scene of incidents. Fire Police will often assist with traffic control for local events and assist local police departments with traffic control when requested. Good public relation skills are a MUST.
Administrative Staff: Many people don't realize it, but the Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department is a business just like any other. The department is a fully incorporated 501.C(3) organization. We have bills to pay, budgets to manage, facilities and equipment to maintain, and customers to interact with. In order to keep the business running, the company relies on the President, Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Trustees for their leadership. Committees consisting of other members are often formed for specific projects and initiatives.
General Members: For those that don't necessarily feel like any of the above are a good fit or just don't have the time, we still need you! Any time that can be given to help accomplish the many tasks and needs of the department is always appreciated!
