This evening FF Christopher Mowry, from the Carney Strong Initiative stopped at the station and presented the members with several boxes of decontamination wipes and literature to raise the awareness of firefighter occupational cancer. These materials where awarded to FDLS through a grant presented by the Carney Strong Initiative.

The Carney Strong Initiative was started after Josh Carney, Battalion Chief at Midway Fire and Rescue in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina with more than 25 years service, was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma in June 2017 at 41 years old. This aggressive cancer claimed BC Carney's life less than four months later. Since then his family has made it their mission to raise awareness and help both volunteer and career departments with educational material and decontamination wipes to help prevent others from going through what they have.
The members of FDLS are grateful for receiving this grant and are thankful for the work of the Carney Strong Initiative.
