December 16, 2016

At 05:15 hrs on Friday, December 16, Company 59 was alerted to transfer an Engine to Lancaster County Station 74 (Elizabethtown) to cover for them while they operated at the scene of a 2 alarm structure fire. Engine 59 completed the transfer with a crew of 5, standing by with Lancaster Truck 23 (East Petersburg). During this time, Engine 59 responded to 2 calls for service; an accident in Company 70's (Rheems) area and a fire alarm in Mount Joy Township. Engine 59 was released at 09:40.

As the Engine was backing into quarters, Company 59, along with Truck 88, was alerted for a reported gas leak at 400 Capital Lane. Crews investigated and determined that a relief valve had lifted momentarily but no leak was present. As a precaution, UGI was called to the scene. Crews cleared shortly after UGI arrived.

Crews were able to relax for a while until being called to the Sheetz on Route 230 for a fuel spill at 14:38. Engine 59 arrived to find a vehicle that had run over the couplings on a gasoline delivery truck's hose as he was making a delivery. Crews stood by while the tow company removed the vehicle. No additional services were needed.

The day continued with 2 medical assist calls at approximately 16:15 and a call to assist Company 88 (Middletown) with a fire alarm. In addition to answering the various calls for service, members also participated in the celebratory parade for the Middletown Area High School Football Team. Despite the cold weather, the turnout and support in honor of the team's State Championship run was fantastic and the Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department is honored to have been invited to participate.
